5 Yoga poses for little superheroes

Themes

Bringing themes in to our yoga practices with children can be such a good way to keep them engaged and get clear on our intention.

When I think about super heroes and how we can use this theme in relation to Yoga, I think about ways that we can remind our children how super they are and help them to build confidence. I think about power poses that help us to take up space (Highly recommend the ted talk by Amy Cuddy about body language >> watch here). I think about ways we can be superheroes by making a difference in someone's day or helping to protect the planet by caring for the environment. I think about what talents we each have as individuals and what makes us super. And I think about building strength, awareness and being able to relax.

It is just one theme, but there is so much that you can do with it!

In this post, I'll be sharing with you 5 poses for your little superhero that you can practice at home! (Teachers may also like to bring this theme into their classes).

Pose One: Listening

Super Hero's need to listen so that they know where their help is needed. Let's practice listening now. Stand in a strong mountain pose. Relax your shoulders. Can you hear something far away? What is the furthest away sound that you can hear? What is the closest thing you can hear? Can you hear your own breath?

Pose two: Balance

You can practice this one together if you would like some support with your balancing or on your own! Lift one leg up, knee nice and high, hold steady and then lower it down. Then practice on the other side, turning it in to a slow, mindful walk. You could imagine a tightrope or a situation that a super hero would need to be quiet, use their balance and focus.

Pose three: Low flying

Before we fly high, we have to practice flying lower down. Go down on to your belly and extend your arms out long.

Relax everything down, then on an inhale start to lift your chest, head and arms. Come back down on the breath out. Try this again two more times.

If it feels okay, you can start lifting your feet up at the same time!

Pose Four: Let's Fly!

Ok, you've practiced your flying and you're ready to go higher! Let's fly!

Start in mountain pose (the first pose) and step one foot back slightly. Bring your hands out to your sides. Push off the back foot and start to tilt your body forward. Stay here just leaning a little forward or keep going until you are parallel to the ground, lifting that back foot up either a little or to come parallel with the mat. Remember the shape is not too important as long as it is safe. You can have fun in this pose by practicing together or by using a wall or chair to help with balance.

Stay here for as long as you are able or for three to five breaths. Then come back to mountain pose before switching sides.

Pose five rest

Super Heroes need to rest too! In fact it is really important that they do! How can they have the energy to save the day if they aren't well rested? How can they have strong focus and quick reflex if they are overtired or sleepy?

Let's lay down and take a rest together now. Get cosey together, you may even like to use blankets and cushions. Play a relaxing song or listen to the sound of your breathing. Take this time to just be. If you need to wiggle or take any movement before settling into stillness, feel free to take it.
